MISS MIKAYLA INMAN

Born
June 26, 1998
"When our daughter Mikayla was born, I imagined dressing her in a beautiful princess dress, pink satin bows surrounding perfectly styled ringlets of brown hair, long painted fingernails and perfect play makeup. She and I would be sitting at a small table covered by a lace tablecloth set with china dishes and cloth napkins, asking each other to please pass the tea and crumpets...

Little did I know that we would be trading in the princess dress for a jersey and pants, the satin bows for a helmet and goggles, those perfectly painted fingernails for mud and oil, and the lace covered table and tea party for a motorcycle and the drop of a gate."

So how did it all begin?
"Ever since my husband was a year old, his parents took him to Silver Lake every summer for a family vacation, so when we had Mikayla we continued that tradition. It was there where Mikayla hear the first buzzing sounds of motorcycles flying across the sandy dunes. Our initial reaction was to try and redirect her interest but her determination overtook our redirecting attempts :)

Mikayla attended her very first indoor motocross race at the age of four. Her reaction was not what we expected at all...she cried the entire time we were there! We thought she was frightened of the noise and kept asking her if she wanted to leave ...she repeatedly said "NO". We told her we were going to leave if she didn't tell us what was wrong...she looked at us and said "I'm supposed to be the one out there racing, not sitting here watching!" It was then that we knew this is what she wanted to do. On our way out of the building we told her that we would check into getting her a motorcycle that she could compete with. I've never seen her so excited as she was at that moment!
In the beginning Mikayla's progress was very slow...her feet almost never left the ground and she was pretty much pushing the bike but as time went on she began to develope confidence in her natural ability.

check out the "training wheels"
The real training had now begun when Chris (her dad) purchased a 125 Honda to practice with Mikayla...he was able to show her instead of just telling her how to maneuver a corner and how to complete a rhythm section consistently and successfully. When to stand up and when to sit down and how to get the hole shot. Her feet finally came up off the ground and onto the pegs where they belonged and she was now competing for position instead of just finishing a race. Her excitement and fun loving attitude for this sport blossomed and she had found her gift...

2004
Her first competition was in Grand Rapids at the Delta Plex where she placed 2nd and 4th...

Can we hear... "Lady" and gentlemen...start your engines :)

...it's not I think I can...it's... I KNOW I CAN!!!

...and she did!!!

2005 SEASON...
Mikayla officially began her motocross career in March of 2005 where she experienced her first taste of endurance. The snow was blowing and the track was a mudfest, but she persevered and her determination to finish the race far outweighed the intimidating weather conditions.

...is this the look of determination or what!
Mikayla was the only one to finish in her class, all of the other bikes broke down or couldn't finish. She had won her very first 1st place trophy!! Mikayla went on last year (2005) and finished 1st in the Super Series (which is an accumulation of earned points for each event you participate in between Log Road, Red Bud and Dutch Sports Park) and she also went on to finish 7th in the State of Michigan.

1st Place Never Looked So Cute!

7th Place in the State of Michigan
2005 was certainly an awesome first year and we are so very proud of her! Mikayla has a passion for this sport that I don't believe most seven year old children have...I asked her one day if there was anything else she might be interested in trying and she replied "Mom...what else is there? Motocross is all there is for me, it's all I ever think about, it's all I want to do and it's all I'm going to do forever!"
When I watch Mikayla compete it's obvious that she's not out there because we've made her go or because we chose this for her...she's out there because she loves the competition, the tracks, the bikes and the challenge. She just plain loves this sport.

On and off the track, motocross is all that our daughter thinks about...she's constantly talking through techniques and changes with her coach (daddy) that she thinks she needs to make for the next time she races.

Guideance from Daddy
She reads her motocross magazines as her practice books for school...and her girly room is now morphing into what looks like a boys room as the motocross posters are now the wallpaper and ceiling decor and her trophys line the shelves :)

2006 SEASON...
This year we've seen a dramatic improvement in Mikayla's riding skills...she has strengthened many of her weaknesses and has matured mentally. Her steadiness and control of her bike has not changed, but her confidence in her abilities has. She fights for the hole shot now and almost always is able to get it.

As of June 10, 2006...

Mikayla has taken 1st place 11 of the 15 events she's competed in! She's currently 1st in the State of Michigan (District 14) and 1st in the Super Series!

JUMP...JUMP...JUMP...
Mikayla has drastically improved her jumping skills since last year...she's getting about 5' up in the air and floating about 15' out from her launch.

Catchin Some Serious Air!
Mikayla's fluency in the rhythm section and cornering have improved as well...she's skillful in her mental ability to determine when to pass or whether to take a corner in the inside because last time around she lost time taking it on the outside. She's patient in making her move...it's calculated and aggressive and always clean! Her concentration is intense during a race...and she throughly enjoys blowing by the boys :)

FOR THE 2007 SEASON...

Mikayla's passion and natural ability has not gone unnoticed...we've had the honor of adopting many wonderful sponsors into our family. They've been gracious enough to extend their help and support for our team and we're extremely grateful for them. Mikayla not only has a wonderful sponsor team...she has an awesome family/pit team as well. Her two younger sisters Searra and Gabriella along with her little brother Hunter and her grandparents attend every race cheering and encouraging her on!
And although Searra's interest lie with animals (horses particularly), she still practices on her quad with Mikayla and is always encouraging to Mikayla...especially during stressful times!

Searra Age 5
Gabriella who will be 4 this September still asks at every race if it's her turn to race her bike :)

Hey! ...when's it gonna be my turn???

Gabriella Age 3

Hunter Age 1
Hunter no doubt has the motocross itch...he attended his very first race one week after he was born and from that day forward he takes his naps to the sounds of the bikes:)
Now everytime Hunter sees us getting on the quad...he makes it known that he wants his turn!

Proud Grandpa
"Grandma and Grandpa both do one awesome job helping out with our "pit crew"...Grandma helps care for and play with the kiddos while Grandpa helps Chris keep the bike running. This allows me to get the photos and keep track of stats and other paperwork. Our children have been an inspiration to us in the way they support and encourage each other's interests. We definitely have an incredibly supportive pit crew that without everyone working together as we do...we definitely would not be such a successful team.
The best part of being a family/pit crew are the practices...Grandpa, Searra and I jump on our quads and Daddy, Mikayla and Gabriella jump on their bikes and we all race around the yard and on the practice track. When we're done...we then go across the street to visit and feed the horses. We're building incredible memories together...so who could ask for anything more?"
